Judges, Officials and trainees - FINA has released their updates to the rules covering Swimming, and these will be applied to meets from October 2nd, 2017. As usual, we are starting to run a series of M6 FINA RULES UPDATE courses around the clubs, given by a senior official who has already attended the course at the Region. For technical offiials, it is MANDATORY that you attend one of these courses as you will need it for when you re-licence (and it will be much more difficult to find a course if you miss this round) Coaches are welcome to attend to be briefed on the updated rules as well.

Commonwealth Youth Games - In case you missed it because of the World Swimming Championships overshadowing them, the Commonwealth Youth Games took place 19-22 July in Bermuda. Full details in various places on the Web, but the Wikipedia article reports that the swimmers from our County, James MacFadzen took Silver in 200m back, Bronze in 200m IM, and was part of the Bronze placed 4x100m Medley team, whilst Tom Dean won the Gold medal in the 200m Individual Medley, and Silver in the 400m IM.

Overall the English contingent topped the medal table with 9 of the 35 medals up for grabs, 9 Silver medals and 4 Bronze.

European Juniors - Congratulations to Tom Dean (Maidenhead Marlins) and James McFadzen (Wycombe District) on their performance at the European Junior Championships held in Natanya, Israel. Tom is European Junior Champion in 200 IM (2:01.02) as Silver medallist in the 400 IM (4:20.20); James McFadzen was placed in Bronze position in the 200IM event (2:02.67).

The Berks & South Bucks swimmers have also been selected as part of the Team England contingent for the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bermuda at the end of July.

Judge Level 2(S) course - We're looking at running a Judge Level 2(S) (Starter) Course at Windsor Leisure Centre (Stovell Road) at 20:00 on September 20th. If you're interested please make sure your name is on the list by letting Sue Green know.

The course is suitable for those people holding a Judge Level 2 qualification. Recently qualified Judge Level 2 officials can attend, but you will need to finish the post qualification sessions before you may commence mentored JL2(S) sessions.

Judge 2 Course: The next county J2 course will be run on 6 December 2016 at Thames room Windsor Leisure centre from 7-9 pm. Requirement for the course is to have passed JL1 but it is not necessary to complete the post qualification sessions in order to attend the course. Module 2 - Overnight Stays and Travel Abroad: Wednesday, 11th January 2016, Surrey Sports Park (Evening) - for Team Managers who have attended the ASA Team Manager Module 1 training and have gained experience in Team Managing at a local level. This workshop builds upon these experiences and aims to equip a Team Manager to manage a team staying overnight or travelling abroad effectively.

GET BERKSHIRE ACTIVE: There are two upcoming Get Berkshire Active events (our Club Forum and Sports Education Week).

Both are ideal for Berkshire clubs.

GBA Club Forum — 15th September (6.30- 8.30pm) Bisham Abbey

Get Berkshire Active hosts three Club Forums a year. The free two hour sessions are tailored for clubs and usually feature topics of interest/relevance. They are also a unique opportunity for a range of different clubs from across the county to meet and chat with GBA providing specific information on how it can support you. At the next Club Forum presenters are Nick Slinn from the Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) and Nicola Dean from the Ann Craft Trust (which support adults at risk) around Safeguarding.

WELFARE OFFICERS: The ASA are offering two courses at the Maidenhead Magnet Leisure Centre on Sunday 25th September. Safeguarding & Protecting Children is 9.30am - 12.30pm, and Time to Listen is 1.30pm - 4.30pm.

The Time to Listen course is free of charge, the Safeguarding & Protecting Children course will be £30 per candidate. (Swim21) Clubs can also apply for bursaries against this course.

Team Manager Forum: As well as the Team Manager Training (next item below) the South East Region Team Manager Forum is being held 24 September 2016 at the Guildford Holiday Inn.

Full details of this annual event, which is an excellent is a great opportunity to get further up to date training, receive help and advice and meet other Team Managers in the region. This year 39 new team managers have been trained in the county so it would be good to see some of you there.

CONGRATULATIONS to Jenny Gray on the award of an MBE in the 2016 Birthday Honours for "services to Synchronised Swimming". Jenny is a member of Reading Royals, and has been involved in the sport for 52 years as a competitor (competing in the 1973 Belgade World Championships), then coach and judge. The honour is a well deserved recognition for her work on synchronised swimming on an international scale.

ANNUAL COUNCIL MEETING: The Berks & South Bucks County ASA Annual Council Meeting will be at 8pm on Thursday 21st July at the Windsor Leisure Centre.

At the ACM there will be elections for Vice-President, Hon Secretary, Hon Treasurer and 12 Management Board members. Any member of a club assigned to the County may be nominated for the above roles, by members of an assigned club(s).

Any proposals for changes to the Rules of the Association should be submitted by 23 June 2016.

Nomination forms are may be downloaded from the Association's website - www.bsbasa.org. Notwithstanding the Association's constitution, completed nominations should be sent to the Hon Secretary by 23rd June 2016.
